Mulch suppresses — it does not erase roots
Covering living weeds with two inches of bark often creates pale, stretched weeds that push through. Spend an hour weeding before you dump yards. Then calculate volume with the mulch calculator.
Clear method by weed type
Water the bed lightly the day before — roots slide out easier. Avoid tilling weed seeds to the surface right before mulch day.
- Annual seedlings: hoe or scrape, then mulch same day
- Dandelion / taproots: dig full root; broken pieces regrow
- Bermuda / quackgrass: remove runners; consider fabric or repeated clearing
- Beds being redesigned: smother with cardboard then mulch (sheet mulching)
Herbicide notes for DIYers
If you use a non-selective product on empty beds, follow the label wait time before planting or heavy mulching. Keep spray off lawn edges and desirable shrubs. Many beds do fine with mechanical weeding only.
After weeds are gone
Edge the bed, decide on fabric, then spread. Continue with edging and prep, fabric guide, and how to spread mulch evenly.
