Most years you top up — you do not strip
Mulch decomposes and fades. A spring refresh is usually 1 inch over existing material after you fluff compacted areas — not a full tear-out. Measure thin spots and order less than a new install with the mulch calculator.
Refresh steps

- Rake and fluff old mulch to restore color and break crust
- Pull weeds that germinated in the surface
- Check total depth — stay near 2–3 inches after top-up
- Add fresh mulch in thin layers; blend edges into old
- Keep trunks and siding clear
When to remove old mulch
Compost spent bark into garden beds if it is clean, or dispose per local green-waste rules.
- Sour, slimy, or anaerobic smell after being piled too deep
- Heavy weed rhizomes matted through the layer
- Switching to a totally different material (e.g. rubber over rotting bark)
- Grade changes or edging rebuild that needs a clean bed
How much for a top-up
If beds still have ~2 inches and you want 3, order about one-third of a full re-mulch volume. Example: a bed that needed 3 yards new might need ~1 yard refresh. Spread with even spreading tips.
