Mulch against siding is a moisture sandwich

Bark piled against wood, fiber cement, or stucco holds water and hides pests. Inspectors and termite companies look for soil or mulch contacting siding. Leave a clear inspection gap at the foundation when you spread.

Practical clearance rules

Local termite practices vary — when in doubt, leave a visible band of foundation clear. Edge the bed with edging options so bark stays put.

  • Keep mulch several inches below the bottom of siding / stucco weep screed
  • Do not bury siding, brick ledges, or hose bibs
  • Pull mulch back from wood steps and deck posts
  • Use rock or bare soil strips against the foundation if you want a neat edge
  • Slope grade away from the house under the mulch layer

How this changes your yardage

A clearance strip slightly reduces bed area — measure the planting bed, not the entire strip to the wall. Recalculate in the mulch calculator if you carve out a rock border along the house.

Fixing beds that are already piled high

Rake mulch down and away from siding; check for soft wood or mud tubes. Refresh the bed with even spreading and proper depth from mulch depth.

Frequently asked questions

How many inches of gap from the foundation?

Enough to see the foundation and keep mulch below siding — often a clear band of several inches to a foot depending on cladding and local pest guidance. Never bury siding.

Is gravel better against the house?

A narrow rock strip drains faster and stays put for inspections. You can still mulch the outer planting bed. Use the gravel calculator if that strip is wide.

Can mulch cause termites?

Mulch does not create termites, but constant moisture and hidden wood contact help pests go unnoticed. Clearance and dry detailing matter more than mulch brand.
