Stage small piles — do not bury one corner
Dump or wheelbarrow mulch in small mounds along the bed, then rake out. One giant pile at the driveway end means the far border gets starved. Order enough with the mulch calculator using your target depth from how deep mulch should be.
Spread technique
Bagged mulch: open bags in the bed where they will be used so you are not double-handling.
- Wear gloves; bark dyes stain skin and sidewalks
- Use a flat bow rake or mulch fork to pull material to depth
- Check depth with a scrap stick marked at 2 and 3 inches
- Keep mulch pulled back from plant crowns and tree trunks
- On slopes, work uphill so loose bark does not avalanche
- Blow or sweep mulch off lawn and hardscape the same day
Even depth checkpoints
Walk the bed after the first pass — thin spots show as dark soil. Add a second light pass rather than dumping thick patches that smother roots. Tree rings need a donut, not a volcano — see mulch for tree rings.
Finish and foundation clearance
Leave a clean gap at the house — details in mulch too close to the foundation. Edge lines look sharp when you redefine the cut with a spade or edging options.
