Standard bag sizes

The most common mulch bag in the US is 2 cubic feet. Some premium lines use 3 cu ft bags. Always read the label — “2 cu ft” refers to volume, not weight.

1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. Bags per yard = 27 ÷ bag size.

  • 2 cu ft bags: 13.5 per yard → round up to 14
  • 3 cu ft bags: 9 per yard
  • 1.5 cu ft bags: 18 per yard
  • 0.5 cu ft pea gravel bags: 54 per yard

From bed estimate to bag count

Calculate cubic yards first, then multiply by bags per yard. Example: 1.5 cu yd × 14 bags ≈ 21 bags (2 cu ft). Our calculator outputs bag counts automatically for your material settings.

Buy 1–2 extra bags for patch-ups — returns are easier than a second store run.

When bags make sense vs bulk

Bagged mulch wins for small beds, remote beds far from the driveway drop point, and when you lack a truck. Bulk wins above ~2 cubic yards on price and labor.

Frequently asked questions

How many 2 cu ft bags for 2 cubic yards?

About 27 bags (14 per yard × 2). Add 1–2 extras for waste.

Why does my receipt show fewer bags than calculated?

Fluffed bag volume can differ slightly from bulk yard volume. If short, depth may be under target — measure in the bed with a ruler.

Do all stores use 2 cu ft bags?

Most do, but confirm on shelf tags. Adjust the bag size in calculator settings if your store uses 3 cu ft.
