Standard bag sizes
The most common mulch bag in the US is 2 cubic feet. Some premium lines use 3 cu ft bags. Always read the label — “2 cu ft” refers to volume, not weight.
1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. Bags per yard = 27 ÷ bag size.
- 2 cu ft bags: 13.5 per yard → round up to 14
- 3 cu ft bags: 9 per yard
- 1.5 cu ft bags: 18 per yard
- 0.5 cu ft pea gravel bags: 54 per yard
From bed estimate to bag count
Calculate cubic yards first, then multiply by bags per yard. Example: 1.5 cu yd × 14 bags ≈ 21 bags (2 cu ft). Our calculator outputs bag counts automatically for your material settings.
Buy 1–2 extra bags for patch-ups — returns are easier than a second store run.
When bags make sense vs bulk
Bagged mulch wins for small beds, remote beds far from the driveway drop point, and when you lack a truck. Bulk wins above ~2 cubic yards on price and labor.
